Biography

William Henry Carter was an engineer, a builder, and a relentlessly curious man. Born in Detroit during the height of the auto industry, Bill spent his career designing bridges across the Midwest. In retirement, he turned his garage into a workshop where he crafted furniture for family and neighbors. He is dearly missed by his children and grandchildren who still use every table and chair he made.

Bill and I worked in the same engineering firm for 20 years. He was the guy you went to when no one else could solve a problem. Brilliant and humble — a rare combination.

The dining table he made for us the year I was born is where my own kids eat breakfast every morning. Part of him is still here.
